Our Mission

The Shellfish Department of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians strives to maximize and optimize the shellfish harvest rights secured through the Treaty of Medicine Creek. The department is tasked with protecting the habitats and populations of shellfish while providing a safe environment for the purpose of commercial, ceremonial and subsistence fishing opportunities for tribal members.

Drug Testing

August 2024 drug testing

Drug tests are required during the month of August 2024 for commercial dive harvesters. Please see drug testing facility info below. Best times to visit are 2-5pm. Busiest time for testing is 12-1pm.

Do not disclose any prescription medications you may be taking at the time of your drug test. If a prescription medication is causing a positive test, you will need to verify the prescription at a later time.

Geoduck

2024-2025 first half geoduck permitting

2024-25 First half commercial geoduck permits will be issued at the shellfish office March 25th – 29th, from 10am to 3pm (including lunch hour).  If you cannot appear during these times, contact the department and an appointment can be made to accommodate your schedule.

To be eligible to receive a permit you will need:

  1. Current dive physical (issued on or after 4/1/2023)
  2. Current CPR/first aid certification (issued on or after 4/1/2022)
  3. Passing UA test results
  4. Puyallup Tribal fisher ID card with current yearly sticker on back (’23-’24) or newer
  5. Shellfish Department issued ID card
  6. No current court ordered suspensions or fines

There is a $25 fee for lost Shellfish Department ID cards.

Permits issued after 4/1/24 will require dive physicals and CPR/first aid certifications to be current on the day the permit is issued.
