As a mark of respect to Tribal members and employees who are veterans or actively serving in the military, the Puyallup Tribal Council has passed a resolution recognizing May 2019 as Military Appreciation Month.
The resolution notes Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day. It also notes the high rate in which American Indians serve in the military.
“American Indian and Alaska Native Servicemembers and Veterans,” a 2012 report by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, gives examples. During World War II – a time when the population of Native Americans in the U.S. was less than 355,000 – more than 44,000 Native Americans served. Three of the roughly 10,000 Native Americans who served during the Korean Conflict were awarded the Medal of Honor. And of the more than 42,000 Native Americans who served in the Vietnam Era, more than 90 percent were volunteers.
The resolution concludes “that all Members and employees of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians who are actively members of the military or veterans be recognized for their service.”
Memorial Day ceremony
Puyallup Tribal Veterans will have a ceremony at the Puyallup Tribal Veterans Memorial in front of the Puyallup Tribal Health Authority on Memorial Day (May 27).
