A new study by the International Council on Clean Transportation found that switching to liquefied natural gas (LNG) marine fuel could increase the maritime industry’s greenhouse gas emissions.
The study included an analysis of upstream emissions, combustion emissions and unburned methane. LNG is mostly methane, and the Puyallup Tribe is fighting against Puget Sound Energy’s proposed LNG facility in the Tacoma Tideflats.
Researchers say the most popular type of LNG ship engine – a low pressure, dual fuel, medium speed four stroke – is also the leakiest. Using LNG with that technology would create climate emissions that are 70-82 percent greater than other marine fuels.
“Using zero-emission solutions such as batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, and wind-assisted propulsion would deliver both air quality and climate benefits,” the report states. Read more.
