Puyallup Tribe Partners with Tacoma Reads Together to Discuss the Urban Native Experience

By TRIBAL NEWS STAFF

The City of Tacoma and Tacoma Public Library are hosting an open conversation in partnership with the Puyallup Tribe on 2019’s Tacoma Reads Together book – the bestselling debut novel, There There by Tommy Orange.

There There was chosen by Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards as it is a unique, multi-generational story following 12 interconnected urban Natives traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow.

“This book about identity and serious issues facing Native Americans and urban Tribes is a wonderful choice for Tacoma Reads, and our tribe is happy to support it,” said Chairman David Z. Bean. “I encourage our members and anyone interested in learning more to participate in the upcoming events.”

Mayor Woodards elaborated on the event, saying, “In partnership with the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, we have unique opportunities to host community conversations and programming to engage all of us more deeply in learning about the urban Native American experience, as well as the long-lasting impacts of heritage and culture.”

There There has already won acclaim, earning a spot on The New York Times Book Review Top 10 Books of the Year and The Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. Orange’s debut has also been recognized as a top book of the year by NPR, The Washington Post, Time and The Oprah Magazine.

Orange will visit the historic Rialto Theater in Tacoma on Friday, September 20 at 6:30 p.m. The reside-style chat is free and open to the public. Space is limited, so advance tickets are available at TacomaArtsLive.org. The book contains mature themes, and is recommended for ages 16 and up.
