World Cup Survey: what we heard
As we prepare to welcome visitors to the region for the FIFA World Cup in 2026, we know this moment is about more than soccer. It’s about sharing who we are as a people with millions around the globe.
Recently, we reached out to Tribal Membership to ask for input on how you’d like to see our culture brought to life when the World Cup takes place here next year. We are grateful and inspired by the thoughtful responses we received.
One member wrote:
“Our culture exists everywhere in this land. It is the duty of everyone residing on this land to learn about the peoples, traditions and histories that are all around them.”
Another shared:
“To be able to bring to light our culture and heritage to a worldwide audience speaks volumes of our people. To share that we are still here, and have overcome all challenges throughout life, is truly an honor and a testament to our beliefs and resilience.”
These — and other — voices reflect a shared desire: to honor the resilience of our people to educate others about the sacredness of this land and to celebrate the strength of our culture.
And we want you to know that we hear you! Your feedback is shaping how we move forward with this partnership. Here are some of the ways we are working to bring your ideas to life:
SEA&WIN app: The Seattle FIFA World Cup Local Organizing Committee is launching a place-based mobile app that will feature a land acknowledgment, Lushootseed words and phrases and will encourage visitors to explore locations across the region where they can learn about Puyallup culture and broader Native heritage.
Traditional cultural events: We will welcome the world to join us for a Coastal Protocol, World Cup Powwow and traditional Stick Games tournaments — opportunities to share our traditions with Tribal, regional and global audiences.
Sharing our stories: We will invite the community to Tribal businesses for viewing parties to where — in addition to witnessing great soccer — we will share our stories through original video, song and dance, reminding visitors that the Puyallup people are still here and thriving.
