A very large earthquake of 8.8 hit off the coast of Russia today, July 29, at 4 p.m. PST. It has generated a tsunami warning which has become a tsunami watch. The watch is effective for the Washington, Alaska, California, Oregon and Hawaii coasts.
Tsunami waves of between 1-3 feet will occur at 11:30 p.m. on the Washington coast.
Around 12:30 a.m., the waves will reach Port Angeles, near where the canoes are. Canoes should not be on the beach and should be above the high tide mark. Boats need to be moored and secured with no staff on board.
If the waves continue, they will reach Tacoma around 2 a.m. with very minimal impact.
We advise all those on coast to be away from the beaches and above the high tide mark. This event will hit at low tide and cause stronger-than-normal currents. This event could last 24-48 hours.
We will be monitoring with Washington Emergency Management on the hour, every hour throughout the night.
Please monitor the news and social media for updates.
