Bourbon Street vibes filled the House of Respect at the February Elders Luncheon on Feb. 21 as colorful decorations and Puyallup Tribal Elders donned masks and extravagant outfits to fit the Mardi Gras theme.

A massive feast featuring roasted chicken with creole sauce, shrimp and sausage gumbo, dirty rice with chicken and sausage, creole green beans, Caesar salad, red potato salad, a fresh fruit platter and wheat rolls with butter was provided to the attendees. Following the sizable lunch, Mardi Gras cupcakes were made available as well for dessert.

Puyallup Tribal Member Dan Sandstrom gave the blessing and prayer before House of Respect staff served lunch.

February’s Honored Elder was Burt Benado, who has worked for the Puyallup Tribe since 1980 in various capacities. The 72-year-old was blanketed by Puyallup Tribal Council Vice Chairwoman Sylvia Miller and Elder Wellness Center Executive Director Vernetta Miller. Chairman Bill Sterud was on the mic and delivered a short speech about Benado’s positive impacts on the Tribe over the past several decades. Benado has witnessed firsthand the positive strides the Tribe has made in all facets over the years.

“I’m happy to be here. All of our departments have continued to grow. Everything has changed around here over the years and everything will continue to change around here,” Benado said.

The entertainment for the second Elders Luncheon of 2025 was a spirited performance from the Steilacoom High School jazz band. Four members of the 25-person band made the 12-mile trip to the Puyallup Reservation to perform classic jazz songs for the Elders.

The luncheon concluded with Chairman Sterud, Councilwoman Annette Bryan and Councilwoman Monica Miller hosting a raffle drawing featuring cash prizes and beaded hats.
