Environmental Resource Fair focuses on future

The Puyallup Tribe Sustainability Program and Tacoma Tree Foundation co-hosted an Environmental Resource Fair just outside the front doors of the Tribal Administration building on Sept. 5.

The two-hour event featured eight different vendor tables where the public had the opportunity to meet with local organizations and community members to work toward providing a healthier local ecosystem/environment.

Puyallup Tribe Sustainability Manager Kalicia Bean said the event was created to provide an opportunity for the community to collaborate about future plans.

“It’s good to have conversations and make connections about climate action. It is a great day,” Bean said. “People are curious and they want to know how they can get involved and want to know what is going on locally, and how everyday actions are impacting green stormwater infrastructure, forestry or its impact on heat waves, wildfires and what not.”

Bean said they want to provide more educational opportunities in the future whether that be workshops, trainings or trips.

“If folks want to get involved in those types of activities, they are welcomed to join our Sustainability Committee. We are always looking for new members,” she said.

Vice Chairwoman Sylvia Miller made an appearance later in the afternoon.

“It has always been a goal of the Puyallup Tribe and our people to always protect and preserve,” Miller said. “Each and every one of these guys (vendors) out here, that is what this is all about, protecting and preserving. We each have a job to do and we’re going to do the best we can.”
