The sight of smiles, laughter and friendly conversation was the norm as nearly every chair at each table was filled at the Puyallup Tribe’s Intertribal Elders Luncheon on Oct. 23 at the Emerald Queen Casino Event Center in Tacoma.
The yearly event facilitated by Elders Wellness Center/House of Respect staff hosted Tribes throughout the northwest, including individuals from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska and Canada.
“It is a blessing to have all these people come here. It is a chance for them to meet new friends, gather with old friends and split bread with them,” Elders Wellness Center Executive Director Vernetta Miller said. “We have a good meal, do a little dancing and give some good gifts.”
Chairman Bill Sterud, Vice Chairwoman Sylvia Miller and Council Members Annette Bryan, James Rideout, Anna Bean, Monica Miller and Fred Dillon attended the party. Sterud addressed the crowd at the beginning of the luncheon.
“We’re really honored you came to Puyallup to enjoy all the people that comes to this. This is really, pretty cool,” Sterud said.
Each person who attended received a free Pacific Northwest Spirit T-shirt with a Sasquatch logo.
The Arny & Friends band performed music from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s on stage. A long line formed consistently throughout the day at the photo booth, where attendees had the opportunity to have their photo taken with Sasquatch.
Cash gifts and raffle prizes were distributed out throughout the day, including two electric scooters.
Heritage Division Manager Connie McCloud gave the blessing before lunch. She said she was happy to see so many people at the event.
“We get to come together and we get to see friends,” McCloud said. “I have seen friends from Lower Elwha, from Makah, from all over the place. We’re all having fun.”
